Terms
The agreement between you and Chessou. Plain English summary at the top of each section.
1. Acceptance
In short:By creating an account or using Chessou, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the service.
By accessing or using Chessou (the “Service”), you enter into a binding agreement with Reinhold Wust, the operator named in the Imprint (“we”, “us”). The current version of these Terms is always available at this page.
2. What Chessou does
In short:We import your public games from Lichess or Chess.com, analyze them, and turn them into personalized chess training (puzzles, drills, plans).
Chessou is a chess training platform. We connect to your public profile on supported chess platforms, fetch the games you played, analyze them with a chess engine and our own detectors, and generate training items from positions you actually reached on the board. We do our best to keep the Service running smoothly but cannot guarantee 100 percent uptime.
3. Eligibility and accounts
In short:You must be at least 16 years old. Keep your login credentials secure. You are responsible for activity under your account.
You must be at least 16 years old to use Chessou. If you are between 16 and 18, you confirm that you have the consent of a parent or legal guardian. You agree to provide accurate information when signing up and to keep your password confidential. You are responsible for all activity that happens under your account. Notify us immediately if you believe your account has been compromised.
4. Anonymous trial accounts
In short:Onboarding without sign up creates a temporary account. If you do not convert it to a real account within 1 day, it is deleted automatically.
When you start onboarding, we may create an anonymous account so you can try the Service before signing up. If you do not convert this account into a regular account, it and any associated data is deleted automatically by a scheduled cleanup job approximately 1 day later.
5. Connecting your chess platform
In short:We read your public games via the Lichess or Chess.com APIs. We never post, change, or interact with anything on those platforms on your behalf.
When you connect a Lichess or Chess.com profile, we use the public APIs of those platforms to read your games. We do not require passwords or write access to those platforms. We do not post, modify, or interact with content on those platforms. Your relationship with Lichess and Chess.com remains governed by their own terms.
6. Your content
In short:Your games and analyses stay yours. You give us a limited license to host and process them so we can deliver your training.
You retain all rights you have in the chess games and other content you bring into the Service. You grant us a non-exclusive, royalty-free, worldwide license to store, process, analyze, and display your content solely as needed to operate the Service for you. This license ends when you delete the content or your account, except to the extent we are required to retain copies for legal reasons.
7. Acceptable use
In short:Do not scrape, resell, reverse engineer, attack, or abuse the Service. Do not use Chessou to cheat in chess games elsewhere.
You agree not to:
- Use the Service for any unlawful purpose;
- Scrape, crawl, or extract data from the Service except via features we explicitly provide;
- Resell, sublicense, or rent the Service without our written consent;
- Reverse engineer, decompile, or attempt to derive the source code of the Service, except where this is expressly permitted by mandatory law;
- Probe, scan, or test the vulnerability of the Service, or breach any security or authentication measures;
- Upload malware, viruses, or other harmful code;
- Impersonate any person or misrepresent your affiliation;
- Use the Service to assist with cheating in live chess games on any platform.
8. Subscriptions and payments
In short:Chessou is a paid subscription with a free trial. You can pay monthly or yearly. It renews automatically until you cancel, which you can do anytime in Settings.
Chessou is offered as a paid subscription. We currently offer these plans:
- Monthly plan: EUR 8.49 per month, billed every month.
- Yearly plan: EUR 6.99 per month, billed once per year as EUR 83.88 (two months free compared to paying monthly).
New subscriptions may start with a free trial. Before you confirm, we show the trial length, the price, and the date of your first payment. If you do not cancel before the trial ends, your paid subscription starts automatically at the end of the trial.
Your subscription renews automatically at the end of each billing period at the current price of your plan, unless you cancel before the renewal date. You can cancel anytime in the Settings section of your account. After you cancel, your subscription stays active until the end of the period you already paid for and is not renewed again. Prices are shown including any applicable VAT.
Our order process and payments are handled by our reseller Paddle.com. Paddle.com is the Merchant of Record for all orders: your purchase contract for the subscription is with Paddle, and Paddle handles billing, payment processing, taxes, invoices, and billing related support. Paddle’s own buyer terms apply to the transaction in addition to these Terms.
EU consumers also have a statutory right of withdrawal, described in our Cancellation policy. Beyond that, we offer a voluntary money-back guarantee, set out in our Refund Policy.
9. Service changes
In short:Chessou evolves. Features may be added, changed, or removed.
The Service is under active development. We may add, change, or remove features over time. We will give reasonable advance notice for changes that materially reduce the functionality you rely on, where feasible.
10. Termination
In short:You can delete your account anytime in Settings. We can suspend or terminate accounts that break these Terms.
You may stop using the Service and delete your account at any time via the Settings section. When you delete your account, your account data, linked profiles, games, analyses, and derived training items are removed immediately through a cascading database delete. We may suspend or terminate access if you materially breach these Terms or if required by law, with notice where reasonable.
11. Privacy and data protection
In short:See our Privacy Policy. You always have the right to access, export, correct, or delete your data.
How we collect, use, and protect your personal data is described in our Privacy Policy. The Privacy Policy is part of these Terms by reference.
12. Disclaimers
In short:Chessou is provided as is. Chess training advice is content suggestion, not a guarantee that you will gain rating points.
The Service is provided on an “as is” and “as available” basis. To the extent permitted by law, we disclaim all warranties, whether express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. The chess training items, comments, and plans the Service generates are content suggestions based on patterns we detect. They are not a promise of improvement, rating gain, or specific results.
13. Limitation of liability
In short:We are fully liable for intent, gross negligence, and breach of essential contractual duties. Beyond that we limit our liability as far as the law allows.
We are liable without limitation for damages caused by intent or gross negligence, for injury to life, body, or health, and where liability is mandatory under the German Product Liability Act (Produkthaftungsgesetz) or other mandatory law. For slight negligence, we are only liable for breach of essential contractual duties (so called cardinal duties), and such liability is limited to damages that are foreseeable and typical for this type of contract. All other liability for slight negligence is excluded to the extent permitted by law. Nothing in these Terms limits any statutory consumer rights you have that cannot be waived.
14. Changes to these Terms
In short:We may update these Terms. Material changes get advance notice and you can object.
We may update these Terms when the Service or applicable law changes. For material changes we will give you reasonable advance notice via email or a prominent notice in the Service. If you do not agree to a material change, you may delete your account before the change takes effect.
15. Governing law and place of jurisdiction
In short:German law applies. If you are a consumer in the EU, the mandatory consumer protection rules of your home country still apply.
These Terms are governed by the laws of the Federal Republic of Germany, excluding the UN Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods. If you are a consumer with habitual residence in another country of the European Union, this choice of law does not deprive you of the protection of mandatory provisions of the law of that country. The place of jurisdiction for merchants, legal entities under public law, and special funds under public law is Leipzig, Germany.
16. Final provisions
In short:If one clause is invalid the rest stays valid.
If any provision of these Terms is or becomes invalid, the validity of the remaining provisions is not affected. The invalid provision will be replaced by a valid provision that comes as close as possible to the economic purpose of the original. These Terms are the entire agreement between you and us regarding the Service.
